The research proposal with the English short title “Siphnos & beyond” was submitted in the framework of the call of the Bilateral and Multilateral Research & Technology Cooperation between Greece and Germany NSRF 2014-2020 Programme entitled “Culture, Tourism, Culture/Innovation and Social Challenges”. It is carried out in cooperation with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany and the software development company Dataverse LTD, as well as with the participation of the University of Ioannina.
On the basis of two PhD theses conducted at the Universities of Jena and Ioannina respectively, intensive field research was carried out and knowledge and research practices were exchanged. Southwestern Siphnos, which still retains its natural and man-made environment largely intact, was chosen as_the research area. The researcher from the University of Jena studied an extensive area, from Vathi to Kamares, investigating the location of the Hellenistic towers in relation to their environment, while the researcher from the University of Ioannina focused on the Mycenaean acropolis at_the site Tis Baronas To Froudi, investigating the area from Mavro Chorio to Vathi. Both studies aim to grasp longitudinal land use patterns that, if properly put to use, may provide solutions to modern infrastructure planning, with a focus on sustainability and sustainable development.
At the same time, as part of the project, a digital recording programme of the archaeological sites of Siphnos was updated, which is the foundation for the development of a mobile multimedia augmented reality application. The application will include interactive panoramic tours, aerial photographs, pictures of finds, as well as 3D photorealistic renderings of selected monuments.
